| Please Note: In response to many out-of-state, long distance requests, Bill now offers phone consultations at the rate of $100 per hour. Scroll to page bottom for details. |
Philosophy: Through the consultation process, Bill shares his truly unique insight, humanistic spirit, and compassion to aid others in better appreciating people with autism. Bill does not work one-on-one with the individual with autism---the team holds the expertise for doing this. Instead, he mentors the team of people who know that individual best in order to view them from alternative perspectives. When the team demonstrates new ways of supporting the individual, that person cannot help but to respond positively. The team may then fully understand the whole person, his or her life experience, and what he or she has to offer the community.
Logistics: Bill consults for persons with autistic experiences of all ages. He requires a minimum of three consultations, which includes a written report following each meeting. If an individual is in crisis, and a danger to him or herself, more than three consultations will be necessary.
Please appreciate that it is unethical for Bill to provide recommendations by e-mail for individuals and families in crisis.
Bill does not permit families to contract with him directly for cost considerations. Funding for consultations typically comes through school districts, county mental health/mental retardation agencies, or community service providers.
Bill requires a commitment from the entire team to attend each consultation. Teams generally consist of: the individual (if he or she so desires to attend), parents and family members, educators, support staff and aides, therapists, and doctors including psychologists and psychiatrists. The meetings initially last from three to four hours each, and usually lessen in duration by the third and subsequent gatherings.
The Process: In the initial consultation, Bill walks the team through a unique assessment designed by him. The line of questioning covers areas of an individual's personal passions, communication, daily routines, independence, sensory sensitivities, physical health, and mental health among others. Bill will transcribe the discussion, and include it in his first report. This report will also list his recommendations to the team for best supporting each individual at home, school, work and the community.
At the second consultation, the team will review the report, discuss the recommendations, and determine roles, responsibilities, and timeframes for implementation of each recommendation.
Third and subsequent consultations are opportunities for the team to share the progress of implementing the recommendations, and discuss what's working and what needs further support.
